Richard McGaffigan, MSW
Program Director

Richard P. McGaffigan is a Program Director for the Prevention Research Center (PRC) office of PIRE in Berkeley, California and he is out stationed at the San Diego field office. He has been with PIRE since 2002. Richard has a Masters of Social Work (MSW) with a specialization in program administration from San Deigo State University.

Currently, Richard McGaffigan is the manager the California Community Colleges Student Mental Health Program (CCC SMHP) evaluation with Bob Saltz as the PI. This evaluation contract has a collaborative research team representing four PIRE centers. The California Community College system is the largest in the United States with 112 colleges and the evaluationis funded through the Califonria Mental Health Services Administration (CalMHSA).

He is also an evaluation team member and intervention manager for the California Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPFSIG) (SAMHSA funding). The Prevention Reasech Center is taking on a dual role as the evaluator of the randomized trial and the technical coordinator for the project leading the 12 selected communities through an acceleraed SPF process. Logic models are used to promote the planning and implementation of evidence-based practices.

Richard continues to work with Dr. Bob Saltz (PI) on the Safer California Universities study a ten-year NIAAA funded project that is drawing to a close. The purpose of the study is to reduce student intoxication and the harms associated with student alcohol use using an “environmental risk management” approach. PRC partnered with 14 California universities (UC and CSU) to carry out this project.

Richard McGaffigan has had the opportunity to partner with PIRE staff in his previous position with the Institute for Public Strategies (IPS) as the manager of the “Border Project” to reduce problems associated with cross-border drinking. In addition, Richard McGaffigan is a board member of the San Diego County Alcohl and Drug Advisory Board (ADAB).
