A partnership with Communities Upwards
Despite a large and growing population of Arab Americans in California, this community is as yet not well-served with culturally-specific health and preventive services. Arab American women are at risk for breast cancer due to many factors including risks for exposure to secondhand smoke in the low-income multiunit housing where they live, and uncertain access to physical activity spaces. We will train and support a cohort of 30 Arab American women to conduct valid and reliable air monitoring in their homes; assess their access to indoor and outdoor physical activity spaces; map assets in support of improving these conditions; and use the results of these participatory research activities to advocate for improved living conditions for the women. This project is funded by the University of California Office of the President’s California Breast Cancer Research Program.
