PIRE California

PIRE CA logo

Based in Berkeley, PIRE California was established in May, 2017 and is a 501(c) (3) non-profit research center linked to the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, which was chartered in California nearly 50 years ago. The Board members of PIRE California are Genevieve M. Ames, PhD, Lawrence Green, DrPH, Harold Holder, PhD, Bob Saltz, PhD, and Elizabeth (Liz) Waiters, PhD. All Board members are based in the State of California.

PIRE California projects funded by the University of California Office of the President’s Tobacco Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP) include:

Commit to Quit Pilot: Mobilizing Arab American Women to Reduce Tobacco-Related Harms. This study’s Academic Co-PI is Dr. Juliet P. Lee. Community Co-PI is Gamila Abdelhalim of Communities Upwards.

Tribal Community-Involved Commercial Tobacco Reduction: Peer Support Beyond the Clinic . Academic Co-PI of this collaborative research project is Dr. Roland S. Moore. Dr. Daniel J. Calac of the Southern California Tribal Health Clinic is the Community Co-PI. Dr. Juliet P. Lee of PIRE-CA is a coinvestigator.

Interrupting Initiation of Smokeless Tobacco Use among Rural California Firefighters. This study’s Academic Co-PI is Dr. Carol Cunradi.

Past recent projects:

Multilevel prevention of commercial tobacco-related harms on rural California Tribal lands funded by TRDRP. PI of this collaborative research project was Dr. Roland S. Moore. Dr. Juliet P. Lee of PIRE-CA and Dr. Daniel J. Calac of the Southern California Tribal Health Clinic were co-investigators.

Tobacco cessation and prevention for underserved Arab Americans: A pilot study funded by TRDRP. This study’s PI was Dr. Juliet P. Lee.

Culturally Tailored COVID-19 Risk Awareness for CA Middle Eastern/North African Waterpipe Users was an Emergency COVID-19 Research Seed project funded by TRDRP. This study’s PI was Dr. Juliet P. Lee.
